Earth Day Today

Today is Earth Day.

I am aware of this day very much, sometimes even painfully so. I wish the whole world would be too. Can you imagine if everyone was?

I rose early, in gratitude for being in very little pain, and decided to plant before it began. I'm trying to figure out how to get the greatest transformation in the front yard with the least amount of work or money. I figure some flashy bright flowers would do it, and when I went to look to see what I could get in flats I found some really pretty mild yellow zinnias which are supposed to get a bit tall and flower all summer. But these ones are very much in bloom and don't look like they get tall at all....just a hunch I have so far. I bought only one flat that day....but when I looked at the yard, I thought for me to be happy with the front this summer the yard would need 4 more flats, to have yellow flowers everywhere, and some delicate drapey lavender flowers beneath the water fountain. The roommate bought the others, and this morning I planted as much as I could before I had to stop.....but at least 72 plants went into the ground as we are getting some heavy and torrential rains in between unbelievably bright sunshine.....you know, that Florida weather? :D and the plants all prefer the rains to hose water.

The pictures are not good, but if you have a good imagination as I do LOL....you may imagine yellow and peach flowers all over come summer. They are still tiny but you can see the flowers. In a few weeks there will be some bright yellow and peach flowers everywhere in the front with some delicate lavender vinca's beneath the water fountain.....happy soothing colors. This last flat has to be planted in the front porch veggie bed.

Zinnias in the Fairy Cabbage Patch............

Zinnia's in the un named patch...LOL....I have yet to decide what to plant in here....it keeps changing.

Zinnia's beneath the giant ficus Suzy, next to lime green sweet potato vine near the tiny birdbath of mermaids.

Vincas beneath the fountain. They will fill out and be lavender/pinkish flowers all year now.

UPDATE 7/25/12: These gorgeous little vinca's have filled out!  And the circle behind it is no longer a cabbage patch but a flower patch :D

Creeping fig hides the chimney and building from those who would seek me out LOL.....its creeping everywhere. I love it but its kinda scary. When I moved in, I planted 2 little 4 inch pots of creeping fig.....it has covered this house.

And now even onto the front porch, over the screens on the windows and over the doors.....its a green life!

 Happy Earth Day
